In early October, the Bishop Ireton High School girls cross country team won the Alexandria City Cross Country Championship. The Cardinals swept the podium with sophomore Rory Kipp finishing first, senior Maria Mate finishing second and sophomore Ingrid Abegg finishing third.
The girls finished second in the Virginia Catholic State Cross Country Championship Oct. 24 among 11 teams. They finished just 9 points behind the winning team, St. Sebastian Academy. The girls were led by Kipp (third overall), Mate (ninth overall) and Abegg (tenth overall).
At the same meet, the boys finished third in the team standings, out of 11 teams, and were just 9 points out of second place. The boys were led by freshman Jason Day (sixth overall).
