Coach Kesha Walton led the girls’ basketball team at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria to its first state championship this season.

Walton was recognized by the school’s athletic boosters at their spring social last month. Laura Kopp, boosters president; Dwayne Bryant, Ireton athletics director; and Ashley Perez, assistant athletic director presented Walton a token of appreciation — a framed copy of the March 14 Alexandria Times cover featuring the team’s championship win.

After a tough exit in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinals, the girls’ basketball team took the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament by storm. The girls won all three of their games to take home their first state championship in school history. In the final, they overtook 16-time defending champion St. Paul VI Catholic High School, 56-52.
