Under the leadership of third-year head coach David Owens, the Bishop O’Connell High School golf program has grown in size and visibility on campus. For the first time in the school’s history, the Knights are not just fielding teams for boys or coed matches, but also for girls’ tournaments as well.

The program, which has 13 female players on its roster this season, recently took third place in a field of 12 teams in the Washington Metro Private School girls’ tournament. O’Connell finished behind Stone Ridge and Holton Arms, and just ahead of WCAC opponent, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic High School in Olney, Md., who finished in fourth place. The Knights were led by sophomore Laya Rizk, who earned a spot in the top 10 for this two-day event held at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, Md.

The O’Connell golf program, which calls the East Potomac Park Golf Course on Hains Point in Washington its home, will play in at least 15 matches and three tournaments this season.

“Our goal has been to give these athletes the best experience possible,” said coach Owens. “We want them not only to learn, play and compete in the game of golf, but to grow in their faith and their love and compassion for others.”
