Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Vienna was named one of America’s healthiest schools for the second year in a row in recognition of the school’s dedication to student, staff and family health.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation awarded the honor recently.
OLGC is one of only four schools in Virginia awarded in four or more areas of health, and the only private school in Virginia recognized.
The annual recognition honors schools for implementing best practices to support the health of students, staff and families. Some 879 schools across 30 states were awarded this year.
America’s Healthiest Schools are recognized in up to nine categories. OLGC was recognized for: cultivating staff well-being, presented by Kaiser Permanente; implementing local school wellness policy; bolstering physical education and activity; enriching health education; and supporting school health services.
“(School) Nurse Jennifer Bliven is the force behind this wonderful award. She works tirelessly to promote health and wellness across our community, and I am grateful to her for her herculean efforts, which afforded us the opportunity to receive this award,” said Robin Williams, OLGC principal.
“We are excited to continue to promote wellness across the school for students, families and staff,” said Bliven. “We hope to continue to grow as a healthy community in the years to come.”
OLGC, established in 1957, is a parish preschool, elementary and middle school with 500 students. The school, a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon award winner, provides a Catholic education instilled with the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales.
