St. Paul VI teams win three WCAC championships

St. Paul VI Catholic High School in Chantilly announced that its wrestling, ice hockey and boys basketball teams are all Washington Catholic Area Conference champions this season.

At Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md., Feb. 7, the PVI wrestling team won its third consecutive WCAC championship, winning by more than 70 points. All 14 wrestlers contributed to the three-peat, especially Peyton Friedman (’28), Leo Badolato (’26), Niko Colavecchio (’27), Cole Wilson (’26), Gunner Colbert (’28), Cash Colbert (’26), Rei Pate Jr. (’29), Koen Fredricks (’26), Theo Darras (’26), Bryan Urruita-Romero (’26) and Cruz Liu (’27). Cash Colbert was named WCAC Wrestler of the Year, and Coach Mike Eastman earned WCAC Co-Coach of the Year.

At The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Md., Feb. 13, the PVI ice hockey team defeated Bishop Ireton High School of Alexandria 2-0, winning the WCAC Metro Division Championship for the fourth year in a row. Will Kovacs (’26) opened the scoring in the second period off assists from Reece White (’26) and Morgan Shaw (’28), before Shaw added a second goal in the final seconds of the period putting the Panthers up 2-0. Matthew Cogbill (’26) posted a 28-save shutout and was named WCAC Metro Division Boys Ice Hockey Co-Player of the Year.

The PVI boys basketball team claimed its third straight WCAC title Feb. 23. To reach the finals, they defeated the Bishop McNamara Mustangs 62-54 in the quarterfinals before topping crosstown rival Bishop O’Connell High School of Arlington 57-51.

The Feb. 23 championship game at American University in Washington drew a sold-out crowd as St. Paul faced the Cadets of St. John’s College High School. PVI trailed for much of the game but forced overtime with a late fourth-quarter surge, then battled through a second extra period to secure an 82-76 victory. Jordan Smith Jr. (’26) was named WCAC Boys Basketball Player of the Year, and Coach Glenn Farello earned WCAC Coach of the Year.
