The John Paul the Great track and field team started the 2025 outdoor track season with some great performances to include top times and marks in Virginia and several school records.
Senior Chichi Obasi, who will run at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis next year, ran impressive times of 56.98 for the 400m to put her top 10 in the state and 25.18 for the 200m both breaking her own school record for these events. She also jumped 17′ 6.75″ in the long jump to shatter another school record she previously set.
Senior Armaan Dhillon, who will compete for William & Mary in Williamsburg next year, started off his season running 48.76 for the 400m and coming back a week later to run 48.06 placing him top three in the state and breaking his own school record. At a recent home meet, Dhillon ran 22.21 in the 200m to set another school record. Dhillon, along with seniors Nick Bouril, Gabe Xantus, and Elijah Thompson, combined to notch a school record and top 20 time in the state for the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:24.75.
At the same meet, the 4x800m relay team of Thompson, junior Jacob Thompson, Bouril, and freshman Andrew Bouril ran 8:10.57 to rank 11th in the state.
At the Gojecken Twilight Classic, the Distance Medley Relay team of Elijah Thompson, junior Toby Obasi, Andrew Bouril, and senior Brady Brennan, who will be run for William & Mary next year, ran a school record time of 10:46.10 to be ranked number two in the state. At this same meet, Elijah Thompson, who will run for Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., next year, ran a school record time of 4:23.63 for the 1600m.
In the discus, sophomore Angie Kovac’s throw of 131′ 1″ broke her own school record and has her ranked as number seven in the state. Not to be outdone, her brother, senior Luke Kovac, set a new school record of 139′ 6.” The team has set other school records so far this season in the girls distance medley relay and both the boys and girls 4x100m relays.
The team is looking to improve upon these early season performances over the last few weeks of the season as they head into the Virginia Catholic State Championships and the VISAA State Championships.
