There are two new Purple Star schools in the diocese.

Holy Spirit School in Annandale and Our Lady of Hope School in Potomac Falls both received the distinction last month. The Virginia Purple Star Designation recognizes “military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military,” according to the website of the Virginia Department of Education. Members of the Virginia Council on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children, voted Oct. 1 to approve the schools’ designation.

“We are truly blessed by the many contributions our military families make to our school community and are grateful for the opportunity to serve and support them,” Holy Spirit School said on its website.

“We proudly support all of our military personnel and families,” Our Lady of Hope School said online in celebrating the news.

According to the diocesan Office of Catholic Schools, there are now nine Purple Star schools in the diocese: Holy Spirit; John Paul the Great Catholic High School in Potomac Shores; Our Lady of Hope; St. Louis School in Alexandria; St. Bernadette School in Springfield; St. Francis of Assisi School in Triangle; St. Rita School in Alexandria; St. Thomas More Cathedral School in Arlington; and St. Thomas Aquinas Regional School in Woodbridge.
