The Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School wrestling team participated in the East Coast Catholic Classic, which is an expanded version of Catholic States. The Jan. 10-11 event included teams from all over the country to compete.
Benedictine College Preparatory in Richmond hosted. Fifth-ranked Delbarton Prep and seventh-ranked Malvern Prep were in attendance along with more than 15 nationally ranked wrestlers.
John Paul Senior Killian McNulty shone at the meet, defeating Malvern Prep in the finals. McNulty won a hard-fought contest in the sudden victory overtime period, winning 8-5. He is the first champion from John Paul in East Coast Catholic Classic history.
McNulty’s win “is an excellent testament to all the hard work and commitment he has made,” said John Paul wrestling coach Jacob Kingett. McNulty was one of only two Virginia wrestlers to win a title out of the 14 weight classes, according to Kingett.
