A joyful congregation at St. Timothy Church in Chantilly watched as Father David Meng, pastor, led 12 students from the parish’s special religious education, or SPRED, program through the sacrament of confirmation last month.

Father Meng started the SPRED program at St. Timothy two years ago to support people with intellectual disabilities or other challenges and their families. Eight students were enrolled. The following year, registration increased to 15 students. Six volunteers assist with Scripture readings, arts and crafts, music, lessons, sacrament preparation, agape and more.

“One of the most beautiful aspects is how siblings and parents have also participated in the program,” Cathy Edwards, parish SPRED program coordinator, said after the April 26 confirmation. “Some of them have said this is the first time they have seen their children have the opportunity to develop friendships, feel the love of Jesus, enjoy the music, crafts and scripture in their community.”
