Happy 50th anniversary “Humanae Vitae.”

As the Catholic Church marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Pope Paul VI's encyclical, "Humanae Vitae," the Catholic Herald is taking a look back at the legacy and teaching of the document on marriage and human life.

When “Humanae Vitae” was first promulgated July 25, 1968, it not only taught what the church has always and everywhere proclaimed, it was also a teaching ahead of its time. Contraceptive technology had been accepted by Protestant churches as early as 1930, and the world had become habituated to think that Christian teaching could adapt.

The recent tragic deaths of fashion designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain have dramatized what The New York Times calls the "public health crisis" of suicide.

Life changed when I began to jam the phone under my pocket Bible on the passenger seat.

On the eve of the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, Pope Francis led a crowd of 20,000 in St. Peter’s Square in prayer for a successful outcome of the talks. Many other people throughout the world also undoubtedly prayed for that result.

If you’ve ever read a movie review in the Catholic Herald, you probably read the work of John Mulderig, assistant director for media reviews at Catholic News Service. He’s being doing this job since 2007. He said in his nearly 11 years, he’s seen more than 1,000 movies — that’s about 150 a year.

It’s been about 10 years since I was a teen participant of the Diocese of Arlington’s annual WorkCamp. I can still remember the thirst-inducing PB&J sandwiches, coated with peanut butter on both sides so the jelly wouldn’t bleed through.

A mother gives us roots; a father gives us wings.
Gospel Commentary: John the Baptist, humble and bold
In the tradition of the Church, the feast day of a saint is usually celebrated on the date of their death when he or she enters into eternal life. It is rare — only twice each year — that we celebrate the birth of a saint.
