
Our first parents were tempted by the serpent in the garden and fell. Genesis tells us three reasons why disobedience to God looked so attractive to them. Eve saw that the tree “was good for food,” it was “a delight to the eyes,” and it was “to be desired to make one wise” (Gen 3:6).

As a public-facing historian of Black women, I have always relished the fact that Black History Month and Women's History Month are successive in the United States.

Note to self: Wake up about the same time every day. Say a morning offering upon rising. Do not go straight to your phone or computer. Dress for work, just like you would when you had to go into the office. Smile at the child of God in the mirror who has been given another day to know, love and serve him — and your loved ones.

The recent comment by Pope Francis that people who have pets instead of children are, sometimes at least, manifesting selfishness brought predictable howls from pet lovers and those who felt he was treading on their sacred right to do whatever they please. But along with unintentionally giving media the sort of juicy flap over trivia that they relish, the pope was identifying a grave and growing problem for nations around the globe.

Bear good fruit
One of the most powerful realities in the New Testament is the transformation of the lives of those who looked upon Jesus with love and faith. Minds were changed, bodies were healed, sins were forgiven, hearts were set on fire, new missions were embraced — and the world has never been the same.
