He sat across the aisle from me on a long train ride years ago.
Like clockwork, his cell phone rang about every five minutes, and each time he and his caller had the same conversation. He would tell the caller patiently that he would be home soon, that he loved him, and that they would watch baseball on television as soon as they were together.

Gospel Commentary Nov. 14, Mk 13:24-32
The month of November sees the liturgical year of the church draw to a close by directing our thoughts to the last things. The beginning of the month offers us the feasts of All Saints and All Souls, so that we consider the rewards and company of heaven, as well as the love of God for all of the dead. The end of the month focuses on the end of time and the culmination of all earthly life, in the vision of Christ the King, Lord of the Universe.

So, Aaron Rodgers is in trouble.
Back in August, he was asked by reporters if he had received the COVID-19 vaccine. And his response was, “Yeah, I’ve been immunized.” In his follow up, the quarterback spoke about how he was not going to judge “those guys” on the team who were not vaccinated, which of course implied that “those guys” were not him.

Try this. Step back and survey your family — and don’t pronounce any judgment on all the various ways you, your spouse and children may or may not overdo it with smartphones, social media, TV, fantasy football, gaming, Netflix, online shopping, food, beer … Just observe all of this.

I’ve been telling you that one of my favorite books lately has been “Morality” by the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. I love it on so many levels. It crosses political divides and just shares flat-out wisdom, on both a personal and a social level. I think if we all would put his ideas into practice, the world would be a lot better place.

Just as “Tiger King” became a defining show of our early quarantine days and “Bridgerton” carried us through the first COVID-19 winter, “Squid Game” has dominated this fall. It’s not hard to see how the Korean drama resonates more deeply in the pandemic’s long shadow.
