Statement from Bishop Burbidge on World Refugee Day 2020

First slide

This week we remember in a special way refugees from around the world, particularly on June 20, a date designated as World Refugee Day by the United Nations. This observance is an opportunity for all of us to pray, support and welcome men, women and children who have been forced to flee their homelands because of war, persecution, environmental catastrophes or violations of their human rights.

Let us also be particularly mindful of those newcomers who have recently arrived in our diocese searching for safety. May we always seek to serve them compassionately through our parish ministries and through Catholic Charities programs aimed at treating their mental, physical, educational and economic needs.

Refugees demonstrate courage, resilience and perseverance in their turbulent journeys. May we always remember that God calls us throughout Scripture to welcome the stranger who has come to us for aid. May he bless them and grant them his safety and protection now and always.
