Statement of Bishop Loverde on the transfer of Rev. Mark S. Mealey, O.S.F.S.

On Oct. 1, 2015, Rev. Mark S. Mealey, O.S.F.S., will begin a new assignment at the service of his international community, requested by the Superior General of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales. Although I understand the significance and importance of the new responsibilities being entrusted to Father Mealey by his Superior General for the welfare of the entire religious community of Oblates, as well the reasons why he was chosen for this work, I speak for our entire diocesan family as well as myself in expressing our profound sadness at his departure. We are profoundly grateful to Father Mealey for his extraordinarily faithful service to the Diocese of Arlington.

Father Mealey has spent most of his priestly life - 36 years - serving in this diocese. His 23 years as Judicial General, 16 years as Moderator of the Curia and Vicar General, his priestly ministry of the parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna: these only begin to indicate how widely and deeply we have all benefitted from his intellectual, spiritual, and pastoral giftedness. Father Mealey has made present in our midst the heart of Saint Francis de Sales and the spirit of Blessed Louis Brisson, the founder of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales. Although we will miss him beyond words, we wish him every blessing and hold him in our hearts with grateful affection.
