Vulgar one-joke comedy about a cellphone-addicted San
Francisco internet worker (Adam Devine) whose life is turned upside down when
he acquires a new device that comes equipped with the virtual assistant of the
title (voice of Rose Byrne), an insulting, domineering personality determined
to get him out of his lonely rut. She assists his romance with a bicycle store
owner (Alexandra Shipp) and fosters his friendship with two co-workers
(Charlyne Yi and Ron Funches), but ultimately proves disturbingly possessive.
The laughs to be derived from a sneering Siri and obvious social commentary on
the prevalence of obsession with the internet are about all co-writers and
directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have to offer. So they pad their story with
relentless gutter talk, tasteless gags and faux feel-good scenes. The result is
bilge by the bay.
Watch out for: Strong
sexual content, including full nudity and implied premarital activity, benignly
viewed drug use, about a half-dozen profanities, pervasive rough and crude
language.
Rated: O, morally offensive;
MPAA: R
