The 2019-20 school year promises to be an exciting one at Bishop
Ireton High School in Alexandria. Renovation and construction in the main
school is set for completion by Sept. 3. The work includes brand new art rooms,
additional classrooms, administrative offices, a new school bookstore, a new
campus ministry meeting area and campus ministry offices. The new academic center,
which broke ground in September 2018 and which will house state-of-the-art STEM
facilities, a new library with meeting rooms and classrooms, a production room,
a new dining area and space for our growing Academic Support program, is on
target for completion in December this year with a projected opening for
students in January 2020. Additionally, a new auxiliary gym and a new upper
front entrance vestibule for the original building will be completed by the end
of November.
Bishop Ireton is proud to have Kathleen McNutt (SMA ’87) as its
new head of school. She officially began in her role July 1. The school also
welcomes back Bill Simmons as the interim athletic director following the
departure of Bryce Bevill and welcomes Josh Goldman (’06) as its new director
of communications and marketing.
“The 2019-20 school year will provide a wealth of opportunity and
excitement for our students, families and alumni,” said Head of School Kathleen
McNutt. “Though challenges and changes are on the horizon, we are strengthened
by our faith in Jesus and our trust in God. I look forward to a fruitful and
faithful year of growth and possibility.”
The faculty welcomes Evrianthi Christodoulides (physics), Edgar
Dawson (computer science), Molly Gorman (English), Joseph Jacobeen (religion),
Brian Kerns (chemistry), Lisa Sbragia (social studies), Brother David James
Wallace (religion), Kevin Weiss (religion), Jennifer Van Pelt (director of special
services), Ian MacDougall (academic support teacher), and Kevin O’Keefe (permanent
substitute) for the 2019-20 school year.
“We are so excited to have a number of new and impressive faculty
members this year,” said Principal Denise Tobin. “Each brings a unique
perspective to the classroom and bolsters our already sound, caring and
thoughtful group of teachers. We look forward to a rich year of academics at
our school.”
Ireton has chosen the quote, "Belong totally to God, be of
good cheer, trusting in him," from St. Francis de Sales as its guiding
message for the 2019-20 school year.
