Not even a two-hour snow delay could prevent Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge from his first visit to St. Michael School in Annandale for Catholic Schools Week Jan. 30.

The day began with Mass celebrated by the bishop. In his homily, which he delivered in front of the first pew, he asked students questions — what his hat is called, what they know about the school’s patron and what makes St. Michael School great.

To that question, students replied, “joy” and “teachers.” One student said, “Great faith in God.”

“You have made my day,” said the bishop. He took the opportunity to speak about the parents and educators who sacrifice to provide a rich education filled in knowledge and love of God.

After Mass, Bishop Burbidge answered questions from kindergarteners through sixth-graders. Students asked a myriad of questions, ranging from if he likes the Mexican-style restaurant Chipotle; who he was rooting for in the Super Bowl, if he’s met the pope; and if it’s fun being a bishop.

“You tell me,” he said. “I get to go to Mass, be with you and preach the Word of God.”

The bishop met with seventh- and eighth-graders, and ate lunch with the faculty.

Fourth-grader Karissa Dinh said she enjoyed listening to the bishop, who was “fun and interactive.”

“I’m going to pray for Bishop Burbidge,” she said.
