After being canceled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the new student luau organized by the Catholic campus ministry at George Mason University in Fairfax returned, drawing more than 800 students to the lawn of St. Robert Bellarmine Chapel for food, music, dancing and games last month.
The popular tradition started more than a decade ago. Leading up to the luau, students donned a large, inflatable pig costume and roamed the campus encouraging their fellow students to attend, sign up for future events and visit the chapel. The luau was held a few days before classes started to welcome new students to the university.
