Marymount faculty seek fall prevention for elderly

Faculty members from Marymount University in Arlington are
working to prevent falls and fall-related injuries among older adults in
Northern Virginia through an alliance of public and private agencies and
organizations.

Funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, the five-member team implemented the Academic Community Partnership
for Falls Prevention Network Hub. Working with 32 Northern Virginia
organizations and stakeholders, the interdisciplinary team is focused on
increasing availability and accessibility to three community-based programs
that promote fitness: Stay Active and Independent for Life, A Matter of
Balance, and Otago.

According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading
cause of fatal injury and nonfatal, trauma-related hospital visits among older
adults; an older adult is treated in the ER for a fall-related injury every 11
seconds; and an older adult dies from a fall every 19 minutes.
