Artists dream of having their work known and admired in museums
or art galleries.
Schuyler Workmaster’s art will be displayed on more than 160,000 windshields
throughout Arlington.
Workmaster, a junior at Bishop O’Connell High School in
Arlington, won the Arlington County Treasurer’s Office’s 2018 decal competition.
The 14th annual contest invites high school students who reside in or attend
school in Arlington to submit images for the windshield decals. The competition
began in 2005.
Along with having her artwork displayed on windshields, Workmaster
received a cash prize of $750 from the Arlington Community Federal Credit
Union.
Workmaster was a finalist in the contest the previous two years,
but her perseverance paid off this time.
“It's nice to see my efforts realized,” she said. “I put a lot of
work into my pieces and the recognition is appreciated. I'm overwhelmed by the
amount of people who have supported me.”
Arlington County Treasurer Carla de la Pava said she is proud of
Workmaster. “Her art spoke to many people,” she said. “It’s the persistence of
Schuyler and the faculty of O’Connell that is admirable.”
The drawing of the Arlington skyline and Potomac River in the
spring as viewed from Washington beat out three other finalist designs from 191
submissions. More than 3,600 votes were cast during the competition. The scene
shows Arlington in the spring.
“The cherry blossoms bring life and color to the picture, which
highlights both its beauty and uniqueness,” said Workmaster. “The juxtaposition
of the city and nature brings together a unified and diverse picture.”
Workmaster liked how the Arlington skyline reflected off the
water in her drawing. “It's a very serene and beautiful scene,” she said. “It
also shows both aspects of urban life and nature in one cohesive piece.”
