More than 3,500 people sang and prayed with great faith and
devotion when the monstrance containing the Eucharist entered the main
auditorium of Potomac High School in Dumfries Nov. 4.

The Eucharistic Congress, which has been organized by the Spanish
Apostolate for several years to promote devotion to Eucharistic adoration among
the Hispanic faithful, this year focused on Pope Francis’ request to mark the World
Day of the Poor Nov. 19. The local immigrant community also joined in support
of the unemployed people of our communities.

The guest speaker was Father Martin Avalos, vicar general of the
Diocese of Santa Ana in El Salvador, accompanied by the Dei Verbum music ministry.
In his remarks, Father Avalos pointed out that “immigrants are also
invited to the Eucharistic banquet as the guests of honor.”

The Charismatic groups had the opportunity to express their
support by joining in prayer and praise, and committing themselves to more works
of charity in the diocese.

In addition to preparing Catholics to mark the World Day of the
Poor in diocesan parishes, the event encouraged the faithful to live and
understand more the mission of the V Encuentro; to pray for Hispanic priestly
vocations; and to prepare for Advent.

director of the diocesan Spanish Apostolate.
