More than 240 people attended the Edward Douglass White Knights
of Columbus council’s second annual Derby Day in Arlington May 4.
The event benefits Tracy’s Kids, an art therapy program for
children at Georgetown University Hospital’s Lombardi Cancer Center in
Washington. The program, started in 1991 by art therapist Tracy Councill, helps
young cancer patients and their families cope with the emotional stress from
the disease and its treatment. To date, more than 10,000 children have
participated in the program, and events such as Derby Day help support their
efforts
.
Derby Day was started last year by Knights Bryant Porter and Jeff
Miller. Miller’s youngest son, Joe, and the family attend the art program. “It
gives them something to look forward to and helps alleviate the fears and
stress of the medical procedures Joe goes through on each visit,” Jeff said.
This year’s event raised more than $17,500 for Tracy’s Kids.
Festivities included a Ladies Derby Hat Contest, won by Mary Chapman;
Derby-themed food and drinks; a face-painting booth, games and an inflatable
bounce house; a giant tricycle race; and an auction.
