One of Virginia's most active abortion clinics is located a little more than a mile from Queen of Apostles Church in Alexandria. According to state records, 1,613 abortions were performed there in 2014.

Pro-lifers gather the third Saturday of each month to pray the rosary and witness for life in front of the Alexandria Women's Health Clinic at 101 S. Whiting Street in Alexandria, across from the Landmark Mall.

The pro-life committee at Queen of Apostles Church, led by Larry Cirgnano and Carol Joannides, decided to place 1,613 pink and blue pro-life flags in front of the church Jan. 9 to remind parishioners and the community at large of the ongoing tragedy of abortion.

The flags were purchased at, one of the leading national suppliers of pro-life material.

"We wanted to reinvigorate our pro-life efforts during the Jubilee Year of Mercy," said David Cook, director of operations and stewardship for the parish. "The flags were born out of that idea."

The flags will be on display through the Jan. 22 March for Life in Washington.

"We wanted to make people more aware of the pro-life issues and encourage them to participate in the March for Life," said Joannides.
