Retired Navy Capt. Edward (Ted) Francis Bronson died at home Aug. 24 at age 88.
Bronson was dedicated to the sainthood cause for Father Vincent Capodanno, a Servant of God and former Navy chaplain who was killed in action during the Vietnam War in 1967. Bronson led a fundraising campaign to rebuild a chapel near where Father Capodanno was killed.
Bronson was the son of the late Edward J. and Rita J. Bronson. He served in the U.S. Navy for nearly three decades and was recognized as the 25th naval aviator to log 1,000 carrier landings.
During his seven tours in Vietnam, he flew more than 200 missions over North Vietnam and was awarded the Legion of Merit among other honors.
According to his friend Judy McCloskey, Bronson was “buried in a simple pine box with his prayer book and a Father Capodanno prayer card in hand. Though he could have been buried at Arlington Cemetery with military honors, he chose to be buried near his mother, and in his hometown of
Wilmington.”
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the Navy Yard Chapel and burial was at Cathedral Cemetery in Wilmington. McCloskey said students attended from nearby Salesianum High School, where Bronson is listed among the school’s alumni hall of fame.
