Although there are 700,000 Catholics in the commonwealth of
Virginia, many may be unaware of the significant impact the church has on the
state’s faith, workforce, education, health care and social services. To
highlight the multifaceted work of the Arlington and Richmond Dioceses, the
Virginia Catholic Conference (VCC) has released a brochure, “Because We Are
Catholic — Faith, Education, Health Care, Social Services and Community.” It
includes a statistical breakdown of how the church serves communities
throughout the state, including that Catholic schools save Virginia $315
million annually. The VCC distributed the brochure to state legislators during
the recent General Assembly in Richmond.
