CHALATENANGO, El Salvador — In one of the regions of El Salvador most battered in a bloody war funded by American dollars, four Catholic women from the United States were hailed as examples of solidarity, of Christian faith and martyrdom, as Salvadorans remembered them Dec. 2, the 40th anniversary of their assassination.

Sitting on a bench outside the Missionhurst provincial house in Arlington, Father John Van de Paer waved to car after car driving past to wish him a happy 100th birthday Nov. 29. More than 50 cars decked out with streamers, signs and balloons were led by an Arlington County Police cruiser with another police SUV ending the parade with obligatory lights and sirens. 

WASHINGTON — While confusion has arisen in recent days in the media over "the moral permissibility" of using the COVID-19 vaccines just announced by Pfizer Inc. and Moderna, it is not "immoral to be vaccinated with them," the chairmen of the U.S. bishops' doctrine and pro-life committees said Nov. 23. 

VATICAN CITY — One by one 11 senior churchmen, including two U.S. citizens — Cardinals Wilton D. Gregory of Washington and Silvano M. Tomasi, a former Vatican diplomat — knelt before Pope Francis to receive their red hats, a cardinal's ring and a scroll formally declaring their new status and assigning them a "titular" church in Rome. 

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis advanced the sainthood causes of 127 Spanish martyrs, three Italian religious women, an Italian archbishop and three priests. One priest collected and distributed what would be valued today as $7 million in donations to people in need, and donated his own winnings from a soccer betting pool to help build a Marian chapel.

VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis said he was dismayed by Catholic communities and groups that claim to be working to improve church life, but attempt to do so without prayer, the Eucharist and unity with the rest of the church. 

MEXICO CITY — Mexican church and civic officials have canceled public feast celebrations for Mexico's patroness at her shrine in Mexico City due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The celebration normally attracts 10 million pilgrims to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the world's most-visited Marian shrine. 

VATICAN CITY — Young people today should not waste their lives dreaming of obtaining trivial things that provide only a fleeting moment of joy but aspire to the greatness God wants for them, Pope Francis said.
