Cathy Nottage, a resident of Elbow Cay — an 8-mile-long stretch in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas — has had to take a lot of things by faith in the days since Hurricane Dorian slammed into the Bahamas and left much of the islands in rubble or underwater. 

Greeted with full military honors, traditional dances and huge crowds lining the streets, Pope Francis arrived in Mozambique Sept. 4 at the start of a weeklong trip to Africa. 

In years gone by, church-state conflicts in America commonly focused on the first of the First Amendment’s two religion clauses: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Tussles over public funds for parochial schools and prayer in public schools were typical no-establishment fights. Now the emphasis has shifted from the first religion clause to the second, which bars government action “prohibiting the free exercise” of religion. State infringement on free exercise and resistance to it by religiously motivated institutions and individuals are the new battlefront in church-state warfare.

Pope Francis announced he will create 13 new cardinals Oct. 5, choosing prelates from 13 different nations as a sign of "the missionary vocation of the church that continues to proclaim the merciful love of God to all men and women of the earth."

It’s not every day that a child witnesses a mother collapse or a sibling suffer a severe allergic reaction. Jackson Payne, a 9-year-old parishioner of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Fredericksburg, experienced both situations this past April. Despite the scary situation, Jackson was able to muster the courage to act and save lives. 

Before the catechetical season gets underway, 30 catechists from multiple parishes attended a presentation by Joseph White, a nationally recognized speaker on catechesis, at St. Thomas à Becket Church in Reston Aug. 22. 

"Now is the time to abandon our dependence on fossil fuels and move, quickly and decisively, toward forms of clean energy," Pope Francis said as he marked the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.
