VATICAN CITY — Before joining hundreds of people for lunch, Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass for the Jubilee of the Poor and prayed that all Christians would share "the love of God, which welcomes, binds up wounds, forgives, consoles and heals."
“We need reminders, so we never become numb from seeing and responding to the cry of the poor,” said Bishop Burbidge in his homily. “Due to our busy and demanding lives, and noisy and chaotic world, we may no longer even notice the materially and spiritually poor right in our midst.”
After Our Lord tells his disciples about the calamities, persecutions and sufferings they will have to endure before the end, he concludes today’s Gospel passage by saying, “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV kicked off the celebration of the Jubilee of the Poor by blessing the St. Martin Clinic, an addition to the free clinic the Vatican operates to provide medical care to people without homes or resources or the legal documents needed to access Italian health care.
“We do this because we love God and we want to serve him,” said Liam Patterson, another eighth grader and NJHS member. “We help others because one of the two main commandments is to love your neighbor as yourself.”
