OXFORD, England — Carlo Acutis, a London-born Italian teenager who used his computer skills to foster devotion to the Eucharist and will be beatified in October, offers a model of sanctity for Christians in a new era of lockdowns, a British Catholic who lived with his family said.

Being a follower of Christ means caring for and advocating for all, especially those facing injustice and suffering, said Bishop Michael F. Burbidge in a Mass June 22 marking the beginning of Religious Freedom Week. The Mass was livestreamed from the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington; 891 viewers tuned in across all platforms.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis advanced the sainthood causes of three men and two women, including an Italian nun who was brutally murdered by three teenage girls who claimed it had been a satanic sacrifice.

The Gospel of Matthew says, “Do not be afraid … all the hairs of your head are counted” (10:30). The Lord Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of this week that even the smallest matters of our life are of importance to God. We do not have a God who stands at a distance, aloof from us and from how our lives unfold, but a God who is invested down to the last hair, who cares about each detail of our existence.

In this week’s decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, the Supreme Court has overstepped its bounds and imposed a legal definition which promotes a confused understanding of the nature and design of the human person. In seeking to address an employment issue, the majority opinion assigns to the word “sex” a meaning that those who passed the 1964 Civil Rights Act never would have imagined, and which Congress itself has declined to adopt. Indeed, the Court’s definition of “sex” is so broad that it effectively empties the word of any real significance whatsoever.
