Standing where the phrase "by the sweat of their brow" is a daily reality for hundreds of Madagascar's poor, Pope Francis prayed for those whose daily bread is earned by hard physical labor and for the unemployed longing to earn a living for their families.

In Madagascar, where the destruction of the environment and the suffering of the poor are inextricably bound, Pope Francis urged government officials to promote development projects that protect nature.

A used book sale, hosted by the McLean American Association of University Women, will be hosted at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, Sept. 13: 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sept. 14: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sept. 15: noon-4 p.m. Items for sale include books, CDs and DVDs, and proceeds go to scholarships for women completing academic degrees.  

A Labor Day Picnic, hosted by St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Fairfax Sept. 2, featured a barbeque and a blessing of the tools. The event also commemorated the historic church’s past including its role as a makeshift hospital during the Civil War, where Clara Barton tended to the wounded 157 years ago. 

Cathy Nottage, a resident of Elbow Cay — an 8-mile-long stretch in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas — has had to take a lot of things by faith in the days since Hurricane Dorian slammed into the Bahamas and left much of the islands in rubble or underwater.
