In a first for the diocese, a single Mass was used to honor both Respect Life Month and Disabilities Awareness Month at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Vienna Oct 7. The merging of the two provided an opportunity for Bishop Michael F. Burbidge to highlight the Catholic Church’s teaching on the sanctity of all life — including those with special needs.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the reinstitution of the permanent diaconate, Bishop Michael F. Burbidge celebrated Mass for the diocesan permanent deacons at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More Oct. 6. A discussion and luncheon followed in Burke Hall. 

Australian Archbishop Anthony Fisher of Sydney used his speech at the Synod of Bishops to formally apologize to young people for all the ways the Catholic Church and its members have harmed them or let them down. 

St. Gabriel Mission in Manassas Park celebrated the feast its patron saint with a procession from All Saints Church to the Manassas Park Community Center, followed by Mass and afterwards, a celebration in the park. 

The winners of the inaugural Missionary Essay Contest, sponsored by the diocesan mission office, met with Bishop Michael F. Burbidge Sept. 28 in Arlington to receive their awards.

Variations of Death with Dignity Laws or End of Life Options Acts have been enacted by eight legislatures throughout the country: California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.
