Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington, makes the following clergy announcement...

This year from Feb. 7 through Feb. 14, we celebrate National Marriage Week. Each year, the Church pauses for a week to support and encourage holy marriages in the United States and throughout the world. Your marriage is a gift to our culture, a sign of God’s unwavering love for his people and a light for the next generation.

Brother Mickey O’Neill McGrath first learned of Sister Thea Bowman nearly 30 years ago as his father was dying. The young Oblate of St. Francis de Sales was in his parents’ house on a Sunday afternoon visiting his father, who lay on a bed in the living room. After his father fell asleep, Brother Mickey picked up a magazine lying nearby and read an interview with the Franciscan sister.

Bishop Michael F. Burbidge blessed a new altar at Holy Spirit Church in Annandale Feb. 7. The new altar of sacrifice complements the altar of reservation and the still-to-come ambo, according to Father John M. O’Donohue, pastor.

This year churches across the Arlington diocese again will participate in “The Light Is ON For You” initiative to encourage parishioners to receive the sacrament of reconciliation during Lent.

Catholic Charities will open a spacious new food pantry in Sterling this month in an expanded Loudoun Regional Office that will serve the western part of the Arlington diocese. It replaces the former Leesburg Regional Office, which has served the area for the past 15 years.

The most striking feature of Precious Blood Church in Culpeper is a huge stained-glass window in the shape of a cross, set into an arched alcove behind the altar. The images on the stained glass depict Jesus’ Precious Blood — red droplets falling into a golden chalice, from a heart surrounded by a crown of thorns.
