With searing images of mob violence at the U.S. Capitol fresh in memory, Joe Biden comes to the presidency as a potential healer of divisions and binder up of wounds. Yet his own prior commitments could prevent him from succeeding in those roles.

WASHINGTON — Hours before his inauguration as president, Joe Biden and incoming Vice President Kamala Harris were joined by the spouses and congressional leaders from both political parties for what was termed a Mass of thanksgiving early Jan. 20 at St. Matthew Cathedral in Washington.

Upon the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, I ask Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for all elected leaders as they take on the task of carrying out the nation’s work. We pray also for peace, civility and unity in our nation. The smooth transition of power is a hallmark of our extraordinary American experience and vital to the endurance of our thriving republic.

“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Hearing those few words, the two brothers Simon and Andrew immediately leave their nets and follow Jesus. Then Jesus calls another set of brothers, and James and John also follow him. Just like that, these four men begin on the “way.”

WASHINGTON — After a flurry of court decisions, the Supreme Court reversed a pair of rulings from federal appeals courts that had put death-row inmate Lisa Montgomery's execution on hold, and it denied two other last-minute requests to postpone the execution.

January is Poverty Awareness Month, and in the past year, many of us heard of, or perhaps experienced, greater levels of poverty than ever before. Neighbors who have always struggled to pay their bills or rent have fallen further behind. Others, who lived on the margins but were able to get by, are now unable to do so. For the first time, some are seeking help to provide life’s essentials: food on the table, a warm place to live and essential health care.

The Virginia Department of Education recently posted its “Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools.” This radical document is to serve as a template for school divisions throughout the state in addressing the transgender issues. The incoming Biden administration is sure to press the transgender issues as well. In light of these developments, Catholics should understand the church’s role and teaching in such discussions.
