Parents of teens sheltering in place may be balancing the hope of keeping them entertained with concerns about the content available to them via streaming services. The following are reviews of some shows parents can feel comfortable suggesting to their adolescents. It's interesting to note that many of the programs aimed at teenagers are set in high schools — hardly a surprise since that's where the daily routine of the target audience is normally centered. Yet, in the present moment of at-home instruction, social distancing and canceled graduations, youngsters may be reassured to see academic life continuing, if only on screen.
Acclaimed diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was killed in a 2003 terrorist attack in Baghdad, at age 55, accomplished more in his relatively brief life than many do who are blessed with longevity. So viewers might turn to the two-hour profile "Sergio," streaming now on Netflix, with high expectations. Director Greg Barker ("Manhunt"), better known for his topical documentaries than narrative films, dutifully packs the dramatization with action, reflecting Vieira de Mello's peripatetic and ambitious career. Yet, while occasionally moving, his biography is largely workmanlike and contains some morally iffy material.

A warts-and-all view of the 43rd president of the United States is showcased in "George W. Bush," a two-part documentary premiering on PBS Monday-Tuesday, May 4-5, 9-11 p.m. EDT each night. Viewers should check local listings, though, since broadcast times may vary.

In good weather, the 80-year-old Alexandria resident walked from her condo, where she lives with her husband and daughter, to the senior center to socialize, play games, join exercise classes and pray. When the pandemic suspended the program and halted her daily walk to the center, the staff managed to bring a little piece of the center to her — in the form of personalized activity kits.
A Mass for parish school communities will be celebrated by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge and livestreamed from the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington May 6 at 10 a.m.
As St. Thomas More Cathedral School in Arlington celebrates its 75th anniversary, the influence of the religious order that ran the school for much of its history still looms large.
This week, I challenged the staff to come up with ways to inspire you, and for that matter, to inspire me.
It now appears that the legacy of the coronavirus pandemic is going to include an ongoing, sometimes ugly debate on the merits of closing churches and suspending religious services to halt the spread of COVID-19. The argument is one of those unfortunate cases where two important goods — here, religious liberty and public health — are set in opposition, with no one likely to emerge a clear winner.
It’s been a trying time for many in the immigrant community in numerous ways.
