Bishop Michael F. Burbidge celebrates Mass at the start of the Lenten season.

This first Sunday of Lent is the temptation of Jesus in the desert, a powerful scene that shows us both the Lord’s humility and the truth of how we are to resist temptation.

What if this Lent, this were the goal? To live is Christ.

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Feb. 24 that in its next term it will examine if the city of Philadelphia can exclude a Catholic social services agency from the city's foster care program because the agency will not accept same-sex couples as foster parents.

Feb. 26 marks Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a 40-day preparation (not including Sundays) for Easter. The word Lent itself derives from the Anglo-Saxon word lenctin, which means spring. The 40-day period also has significance: Moses stayed on Mount Sinai for 40 days; Elijah walked 40 days to Mount Horeb; and Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days in the desert before beginning his public ministry.
