Our Holy Father Pope Francis has called us to observe the second World Day of the Poor on Sunday, November 18. He has asked us once again to focus our attention on those throughout the world and in our own Diocese who are suffering from material or spiritual poverty.

The annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development will be held in the Diocese of Arlington the weekend of Nov. 17-18 to coincide with the second World Day of the Poor.

“Preach the Gospel at all times and if necessary use words.” This popular phrase is a reality for Deacon Timothy Slayter, a parishioner at Sacred Heart Church in Manassas and principal at Cameron Elementary School in Alexandria. As a principal in a public school there is a limit to how much he can talk about his faith at work, but that doesn’t mean it goes away entirely.

At the start of the annual fall meeting of the U.S. bishops in Baltimore, Archbishop Christophe Pierre encouraged the U.S. bishops to work hard together to restore trust and bring about church reform amid the current crisis in the church. 

The second World Day of the Poor, initiated by Pope Francis last year, is Nov. 18, with the theme, “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him” (Ps 34:6). The Diocese of Arlington is offering several opportunities to assist the poor in concrete ways.
