The Catholic Church teaches that, while we always affirm the indissolubility of marriage, a person is not obliged to remain in a violent or abusive situation. Bishop Emeritus Paul S. Loverde received the Enders Island Medal of Honor Oct. 13 in Mystic, Conn. The event honored members of the community who are dedicated to lives of service and virtue. 

The trio, known as the Child Martyrs of Tlaxcala, were among the early converts to Christianity in Mexico. They are considered the first martyrs in the Americas, "protomartires," because they were killed for their faith and will be canonized for that reason.
