Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Jacinta Marto and Blessed Francisco Marto, two of the shepherd children who saw Mary, during his visit to Fatima May 13. He is making the two-day visit to Fatima to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Marian apparitions. Check back for complete coverage.

LEIRIA, Portugal — Pope Francis said his two-day pilgrimage to Fatima would be a time of prayer and encounter with Jesus and Mary. The pope's trip was planned for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Mary's apparitions to three shepherd children in Fatima.

Father Williams, pastor of Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Springfield, in southeastern Vermont, lives in its 5,000-square-foot rectory, and though he's not complaining, he quipped, "If you want to know my preference, go look at the tiny house."

FATIMA, Portugal — Mary's example of believing and following Jesus is what matters most; she cannot be some image "of our own making" who Christians barter with for mercy, Pope Francis said. On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Marian apparitions at Fatima, the pope asked tens of thousands of pilgrims May 12 to reflect on "which Mary" they choose to venerate, "the virgin Mary from the Gospel" or "one who restrains the arm of a vengeful God?"

Spirited sci-fi follow-up in which the hero (Chris Pratt) of the 2014 original encounters his long-lost father (Kurt Russell), a demi-god who created, and rules over, his own paradise-like planet. In continuing to adapt a series of Marvel comics, writer-director James Gunn maintains a jaunty atmosphere but adds an interesting allegory about the dangers of selfishness.

Confused cautionary tale about a young office worker (Emma Watson) who is thrilled when a friend (Karen Gillan) gets her a job at the world's leading social media company (led by founders Tom Hanks and Patton Oswalt). But the corporate culture turns out to be unsettlingly cult-like and the outfit's stated goal of enlisting every person on the planet as a member raises troubling issues about privacy and the power of big business.

Dumped by the heiress (Renee Taylor) he long ago married for her money, and left penniless by a prenuptial agreement, a lazy ne'er-do-well (Eugenio Derbez) moves in with his estranged sister (Salma Hayek), a hardworking widow with a 10-year-old son (Raphael Alajendro).

This column will provide a platform for a range of voices and serve a two-pronged mission. First, we hope to highlight the specific contributions that young people can (and already do) offer to the church. Second, we want to examine what the church can offer to young people at a time and in a culture characterized by skepticism of institutional religion, saturation with identity politics, and changes in communication and commitment.
