Step into a classroom at Siena Academy, a Catholic Montessori school in Great Falls, and rows of desks and a large chalkboard are nowhere in sight. No hefty textbooks line the shelves and no bell rings to signal a change in subjects. Instead, a young boy reads cross-legged in a corner as another arranges a […]
Tilly Egge Coyle, a graduate of Bishop O’Connell High School and parishioner of St. Agnes Parish in Arlington, lost her husband, Matt, to a cardiac arrest in February. He was 40 years old. The family has three boys, aged 5, 3 and 2 months, the youngest born about a month after Matt died. Because the […]
There’s a hidden gem in the Arlington Diocese for older single Catholics and it’s got it all: faith, service, fun and, perhaps most importantly, a community with shared values. Prime Time Single Catholics (PTSC) of Northern Virginia is a club that serves single Catholics aged 40 and over who are free to marry in the […]
A lot of ministry depends on meeting people where they are. The diocesan young adult Catholic Sports Club unites young people and clergy on the basketball court and soccer field. Theology on Tap brings speakers to bars. The Legion of Mary goes door-to-door to visit Catholics in their own homes. Not to be overlooked, ministry […]

St. Expeditus was one of six Armenian Christians, possibly Roman soldiers, who were martyred in Melitene. His fellow martyrs are Sts. Hermogenes, Gaius, Aristonicus, Rufus and Galata. There is documentary evidence that St. Expeditus was venerated in Turin in northern Italy during the Middle Ages. From there, devotion to him spread to Germany and Sicily in the 17th century, but how he became the saint of procrastinators is harder to pin down.

The patron saint of the Arlington Diocese is St. Thomas More – a 16th-century writer, philosopher, lawyer, chancellor of England and martyr. This saint of the public square serves as an apt model for our diocese, so close to the nation’s capital, and apt as well for the Church’s current conflict with the administration. The […]
“The Catholic Church opposes life-saving stem-cell research!” How many times have we seen this claim repeated by credulous reporters? More importantly, how many of us know that this claim is completely false? To be clear, the Catholic Church does oppose embryonic stem-cell research – that is, the kind of research that creates and destroys embryonic […]
