BALTIMORE — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops gathered for their fall plenary assembly in Baltimore, November 11-14.
The bishops began their plenary in prayer at the Baltimore Basilica, and as the public session of the assembly began, they sent a message to the Holy Father, followed by an address by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, U.S. papal nuncio. Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and USCCB president, also addressed the bishops.

Synodality is something that needs to be experienced to make sense. Glimpses of headlines on the Synod on Synodality might lead the average Catholic to believe the church is becoming a democracy with no respect for tradition. It is neither of those things. It is a major step toward the main objective of the church: to love every person in the unique way they need to be loved just as Jesus did and God the father fulfills in his omnipresence.

If there’s a parish party, Carolyn LaRosa can be found cleaning up in the kitchen afterward. On an average day, she’s sorting canned goods in the parish food pantry or on the road to pick up gleaned donations from Safeway or Panera. She is a charitable clearinghouse, according to her fellow parishioners at St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Fairfax. Her parish is where requests and donations intersect. And everyone knows her chili. LaRosa was our 2023 “Herald Angel.”
