As the fifth anniversary of his apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetitia” approaches, Pope Francis announced that the Catholic Church will dedicate more than a year to focusing on the family and conjugal love.

VATICAN CITY — On a Christmas like no other, Pope Francis prayed for people who could not be with their families because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he urged everyone to recognize and help those who are suffering even more.

Nearly 20 young volunteers reenacted a live Nativity scene for drivers-by at Precious Blood Church in Culpeper Dec. 20, braving the night air to portray Mary, Joseph, an angel, shepherds and the three Wise Men. 

The coronavirus pandemic and its repercussions dominated this year’s news, but the diocese also celebrated ordinations, built and renovated churches and schools, mourned lost loved ones and marked important milestones. 

Classmates from Yorktown High School in Arlington visit graves for those who can’t pay respects to departed family members during Christmas.
