The Vatican announced that due to the coronavirus pandemic, several beatifications scheduled for May and June will be postponed, including the beatification of a mentor and friend of St. John Paul II.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis offered his early morning Mass for journalists and members of the media who, despite the risks, work tirelessly to inform the public of the ongoing pandemic. “Let us pray today for the men and women who work in the communications media,” the pope said May 6 at the start of […]

Pandemic restrictions have upset plans for pilgrimages and major public Masses celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of St. John Paul II. But it hasn't stopped book launches and an online film premiere about the life and legacy of Karol Wojtyla, who was born May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland.

Parents of teens sheltering in place may be balancing the hope of keeping them entertained with concerns about the content available to them via streaming services. The following are reviews of some shows parents can feel comfortable suggesting to their adolescents. It's interesting to note that many of the programs aimed at teenagers are set in high schools — hardly a surprise since that's where the daily routine of the target audience is normally centered. Director Greg Barker ("Manhunt"), better known for his topical documentaries than narrative films, dutifully packs the dramatization with action, reflecting Vieira de Mello's peripatetic and ambitious career. Yet, while occasionally moving, his biography is largely workmanlike and contains some morally iffy material.

A warts-and-all view of the 43rd president of the United States is showcased in "George W. Bush," a two-part documentary premiering on PBS Monday-Tuesday, May 4-5, 9-11 p.m. EDT each night. Viewers should check local listings, though, since broadcast times may vary.

Delfina Vargas never missed a Friday at St. Martin de Porres Senior Center in Alexandria, when an extraordinary minister of holy Communion brought the Eucharist. In good weather, the 80-year-old Alexandria resident walked from her condo, where she lives with her husband and daughter, to the senior center to socialize, play games, join exercise classes and pray. When the pandemic suspended the program and halted her daily walk to the center, the staff managed to bring a little piece of the center to her — in the form of personalized activity kits.
