“I was blessed to make awesome friends, guys and girls at school, and my decision to enter seminary would have been very difficult without them,” said Blank. “Simple and informal fraternity with friends has been the backbone of my discernment. They know me so well, and give me the courage to do God’s will.”
A seminarian’s faith journey stretched from France to Rome and across the United States.
James Waalkes came to embrace the Catholic faith — and his vocation — through an 88-year-old priest friend’s encouragement at key points in his life. Waalkes will be ordained a transitional deacon at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington June 2.
Sean Koehr’s parents, whose home parish is St. John the Evangelist Church in Warrenton, knew that he had a vocation long before he did. When Koehr was a child, his dad gave nicknames such as “Dan the Man” and “Big Kev” to his 12 kids. Koehr’s monicker was “Father Sean.”
Deacon Atanacio Sandoval was ordained in January 2015 and is now the sole Spanish-speaking member of the clergy at a parish with a large Hispanic population. And while the 48-year-old deacon stresses that he ministers to all parishioners, not just Spanish-speakers, the need for his service stretches far beyond the boundaries of his Reston parish.
Several priests in the Diocese of Arlington will mark special ordination jubilees this year. One will celebrate his 60th, another his 50th and six will mark their silver jubilees. Meet the jubilarians.
Father Joseph Francavilla has served at Holy Transfiguration, one of five Eastern Catholic parishes in the Washington area, for the past 47 years.
Deacon Albert J. Anderson Jr. is a permanent deacon serving his parish, St. Joseph Church in Alexandria, since 2011.
