First class relics of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque will be on display July 2-4 at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-90) was a French nun known as the Apostle of the Sacred Heart who received mystical visions of Jesus Christ following her entrance into religious life in 1671. These visions prompted her on a life’s mission of spreading the message of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. With the aid of St. Claude de la Colombiere, she was able to spread the Sacred Heart of Jesus throughout the church leading to her canonization in 1920.

Pope John Paul II felt close to the message of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, reflected in his 1986 encyclical “Dives in Misericordia” which aided in the revival of St. Margaret Mary’s spirituality across the world.
