Volunteer fair to offer opportunities for older adults

Volunteer opportunities for older adults will be showcased at
a “Sail into Service” event co-sponsored by Catholic
Charities’ RSVP program, AARP and Volunteer Alexandria.
Alexandria’s Vice Mayor “Dell” Pepper will be the guest
speaker.

The event will take place Thursday, June 18, from 4-7 p.m. at
St. Martin de Porres Senior Center, 4650 Taney Ave,
Alexandria.

Local agencies will offer information and volunteer
opportunities that encourage adults aged 55 and older to be
active and engaged in community service. The agencies aim to
match volunteers with positions that relate to their
interests and abilities and fit into their daily schedules.

In addition to the sponsoring agencies, represented
organizations will include the Smithsonian’s Air and Space
Museum, the Alexandria Public Library, Wright to Read, SCAN
(Stop Child Abuse Now), and Alive.

“The fair will offer networking opportunities for adults,
ages 55 and better, and will allow them to share their
talents and expertise while staying connected with the larger
community,” said Jeannine Purdy, program director for
Catholic Charities’ RSVP program.

The event will include door prizes and light refreshments.
