What is distinctive about your parish? What is your parish’s charism? The spirit of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton shines on the parishioners of the church in Lake Ridge that bears her name. Following her exhortation to “do the will of God … in the manner he wills it … because it is his will” is a distinct charism of this parish. One way the parishioners fulfill God’s will is to live the baptismal call to make disciples of all nations. A wide range of faith formation and evangelization programs such as Reach More and a strong emphasis on living the liturgical seasons through celebrations like Ember Days, Advent/Lenten Missions, and saint feast days, equips parishioners to be true disciples. This, then, encourages and emboldens them to be disciple makers, bringing others closer to Christ.
What is one unique thing visitors to your parish should do or see while there? Visitors will notice the beautiful statues, artwork and illuminated Stations of the Cross that adorn the main church and chapel offering quiet nooks for prayer and contemplation. The statue of St. Michael between the confessionals is particularly stunning. It reminds the parishioners of the formidable warrior who fights the spiritual battle alongside them. The lower level of the rectory, former parish offices, has been set apart and transformed into Bayley’s Cellar (Bayley was St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s maiden name). This cozy place, dubbed “the living room of the parish,” provides a relaxing atmosphere for Bible study groups and social gatherings where the roots of evangelization and discipleship can spring forth.
What is a new ministry you’ve started (or a longstanding one)? The clergy and staff at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton dedicate themselves to recognizing and supporting the needs of parishioners. The Seton Sentinels is a new women’s ministry whose vision is to “maintain God’s army of women” through Christ-centered living. It strengthens women to use their gifts to benefit their family, parish, community, and themselves through faith,
education, service, and hospitality. The Vocations Crucifix Program encourages families to pray for all vocations (religious, married life, single life) using a beautifully appointed silver crucifix for the family to take home for the week and place in a prominent spot for prayerful reflection.
Additionally, two new scouting troops, American Heritage Girls and Trail Life for Boys were recently chartered at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
Is there a special way your parish encourages and supports faith formation? Faith Formation permeates every ministry at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. This is clearly evidenced by perusing the parish bulletin which in addition to listing parish opportunities and events, showcases for families how to live liturgically through the seasons of year. For children, there are classes, retreats, service projects, vacation Bible school, Eucharistic processions and holy hours. For adults and families, there are Ember Day reflections and activities, seasonal parish missions, Bible studies, small groups and much more. There are also several opportunities for fellowship and fun such as Trivia Night (the proceeds of which go to Birthright), family movie night and the annual parish picnic. The parish recently added a room for people with special needs, and a Trail Life member created a special-needs cart for the room for his service project. Additionally, the “Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” program will be coming soon to help preschoolers at the start of their faith journey, and of course, there is a dedicated team that leads the RCIA program to walk with those who wish to enter into full communion with the church.
What would a visitor say about your parish, and how do new parishioners get involved? After being greeted warmly upon entering, a visitor will undoubtedly note the reverence as well as the joyful spirit that resounds in the church. The love of Christ and the enthusiastic energy of evangelizing permeates through the parishioners whether it be the ushers, choir members, greeters, the large family filling a pew or the quiet person praying the rosary in the back. Kiosks in the narthex and downstairs will direct new parishioners to the many and varied opportunities to use their gifts and talents in ministry.
A great array of community resources can be found there as well. The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton website, the bulletin, and pulpit announcements keep everyone informed about upcoming events.
What is something we should know about your clergy? Fathers Brian G. Bashista, pastor, and Dort A. Bigg, parochial vicar, and Deacon Robert W. Warner all focus on shepherding their flock. They are encouraging, supportive and available. Their homilies are theological as well as relevant to today’s parishioner. They often inject their own sense of humor into the homily while still speaking the truth that so desperately needs to be heard today. It is also fortunate that Fr. Bashista is a trained architect as the church building is currently undergoing a massive renovation.
Is there a standout or longtime staff member or volunteer that you would like to tell us about? It is difficult to select one person among the many who have faithfully dedicated themselves to this outstanding parish family. For the last several years, the parish has hosted an Epiphany Volunteer Party to recognize the hundreds of servant leaders who collaborate to help the parish run smoothly. It is attended by approximately 200 people every year.
Would you like to share anything else about your parish? St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church is like a second home for many of the parishioners. It has a willing, dedicated, and loving heart just like its patroness.
