Members of the Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School community in Dumfries gathered last month to dedicate a new theater light board in honor of Jason Brunsman, class of 2022.
Jason passed away in a car accident on Route 1 near Lorton in the early morning of Feb. 14 while on his way home from a night shift at work. He was 19 years old.
Jason was a dedicated drama technician during his time at John Paul. Fittingly, his younger brother, a current student, has taken over those duties and served as lighting operator during the spring musical, “Joseph and Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” which opened later that evening.
Father Christopher Tipton, chaplain, presided over the dedication ceremony, where those assembled reflected on the Scripture passage, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (Jn 8:12) Brunsman family and friends, members of the John Paul faculty and staff and the play cast attended. Father Tipton spoke briefly and then dedicated the light board while the community looked on and prayed together. Father Tipton and Dominican Sr. Ann Dominic, assistant principal, hosted a small reception for the family and friends after the dedication, and all stayed for the musical’s opening night performance.
John Paul the Great thanks and expresses gratitude to those who made this new light board possible, including generous families, fine arts supporters, and all those who love Jason.
It is a beautiful testimony to the strength of the John Paul community to see people come together to support each other.
