The Catholic Herald interviewed a Catholic author on his new book on apostleship.

Book: “Put out into the Deep: Become the Apostle You are Called to Be.” (Scepter Publishers Inc., 2023).

Author: Stephen Gabriel, St. James Church in Falls Church

Synopsis: Advice on how the faithful can be modern apostles in everyday life, drawing from church teaching, the saints and personal experience.

Why did you write this book? There is a greater need more than ever for the laity to evangelize those with whom they interact day in and day out. So many people today have no relationship with God. The number of unchurched among us are growing by leaps and bounds. Confusion about our sexuality is rampant. The laity are the ones rubbing shoulders with these people every day. If we don’t help them, who will? My hope is that this book will inspire many to take their apostolic calling seriously and reach out to their friends, family and colleagues and help them to nurture a deep friendship with Christ.

What’s something else the average Catholic in the pew should know about it? We are all called to be apostles. We can carry out an effective apostolate in a very natural way with our friends — true friendship is the key. We want what is best for our friends, both in this life and in eternity. This book provides many anecdotes of regular, everyday people like you and me who reached out to friends, family and colleagues, and made a profound difference in their lives.
