Donations are still pouring in following the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia Buddy Walk Oct. 6 in Lorton.
The 20th anniversary event has raised more than $89,000, with the team of “Sofia’s Skywalkers” topping the leaderboard at nearly $12,000 raised during Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
“We are grateful and humbled by the generosity of our friends and family who stepped up to support this amazing cause,” said Jeanette Puritano, mother of Sofia Puritano, who was born with Down syndrome in 2003. “The DSANV has been there for our family since Sofia was born. They reached out to us to offer assistance as we learned more about Down syndrome. Through the programs they offer, Sofia has gained skills and met great friends.”
Sofia, who is a member of Nativity Catholic Church in Burke, served as grand marshal of the Buddy Walk, and was a featured speaker. “ We are blessed to have this organization help us at various stages in Sofia’s life and we are more than happy to be able to give back,” said Jeanette.
