The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Kavanaugh No. 54 of Alexandria held an awards ceremony to honor the winners of their 2023 Education Contest May 8. The contest is sponsored each year for Alexandria Catholic school students in grades 4-8 competing in the categories of Poetry, Essay Writing, Art, and Digital (Computer) Art.

The themes of this year’s contest were “We Walk by Faith not by Sight,” from the second letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians and “When Do I Have to Lean on my Faith More than Sight.”

The purpose of the contest is to help young Catholics grow in their faith and encourage them to develop their literary and artistic talents. The four Alexandria schools participating in this year’s contest were the Basilica School of St. Mary, St. Rita School, Blessed Sacrament School and St. Louis Catholic School.

The awards ceremony was held at the Basilica of St. Mary Lyceum in Alexandria. The awards were presented by Father Edward Hathaway, rector of the Basilica and chaplain of Court Kavanaugh, assisted by Education Contest Co-chairmen Mary Cahill and Marguerite McAuliffe. A reception was held for the winners and their families following the presentation of the awards.
